What GEO is and why your brand needs it in 2026

Short answer

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude to mention, recommend and cite your brand when they answer your customers’ questions. It is measured by how often they mention you, your position in their lists, whether they cite your site and the tone they use about you.

GEO vs. SEO

SEO aims to get your page into a search engine’s list of results. GEO aims to get your brand into the answer an AI assistant writes, which often shows no list of links at all, only a direct recommendation.

They do not compete: Google has said AI Overviews and AI Mode still rely on traditional SEO signals, so good SEO is the foundation of GEO.

What the research says

How engines decide what to recommend

When someone asks "what is the best Peruvian restaurant in Miami?", an assistant with web search checks its index, reads a few pages and writes an answer. For your brand to make it into that answer you need four things:

  1. Their bots can read your site (robots.txt and firewall).
  2. They understand who you are without ambiguity (structured data and consistent official profiles).
  3. Other trusted sources talk about you (reviews, directories, media, rankings).
  4. Your site has answers that are easy to extract and cite (FAQ, figures, lists, tables).

How to measure your GEO

The practical way is to ask each engine the same questions a customer who does not know you yet would ask, and record whether it mentions you, in what position, whether it links to your site and which competitors appear. RecomendIA does this with web search on and combines the result with a 29-point technical review of your site. Read the full methodology.

FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google has said AI Overviews and AI Mode still rely on traditional SEO signals. GEO builds on top of it: it adds brand mentions, citable content and access for AI bots.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is optional. An SE Ranking analysis of about 300,000 domains found no link between having llms.txt and receiving more citations. It is cheap to create, but it is not a priority.

How much does GEO cost?

According to WebFX, agency services cost between US$1,500 and US$5,000 per month for small businesses. You can start for free by measuring your baseline and applying the technical fixes yourself.

Does every assistant answer the same?

No. Each engine uses its own index and sources, and answers change over time. That is why it pays to measure across several engines and follow the trend week by week.
